In this increasingly hectic and stressful year 2020, people are looking for calm wherever they can find it – from roaming the fields to adopting plants. But now there is another natural way to restore your cortisol levels: give the cow a hug.
In several parts of the world, people have started to adopt the so-called wellness trend, which is said to originate from the Netherlands, where it is known as “koe knuffelen”.
According to BBC, the practice of cuddling cows is believed to reduce stress in humans by releasing the binding hormone oxytocin.
Cows are chosen specifically for their warm body temperature and calm demeanor, the newspaper reported.

“Cows are very relaxed animals, they don’t fight, they don’t get in trouble,” a farm owner who promotes the practice told the BBC. “You come to the fields and we have special hugging cows and you can lie down next to [them] – people think it’s very relaxing. “

Farms in the United States and Switzerland have also embraced the wellness fad which, according to one 2007 study in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science, also benefits cows.
Researchers have found that when animals are rubbed, massaged, or petted, they also experience relaxation and pleasure.
“This suggests that cows may partly perceive human caressing of areas of the body that are often licked in the same way as social licking,” the researchers write in their study.

However, if you are not near a farm, petting smaller pets has also been shown to lower blood pressure in humans and provide relaxing effects.
